Known as one of the leading bands from Japan and widely considered to be one of the best live bands in the world, ENVY’s debut performance in the region promises to be a spectacular evening. This exclusive Singapore gig on 9 August 2008 at the Esplanade Concert Hall will bring ENVY’s explosive stage presence to audience here having thrilled the world during their various tours over the past years. On a career high after releasing their latest album, ‘Insomniac Doze’ in 2006 and the more recent ‘Abyssal’ EP, ENVY has also supported great acts such as Mogwai, Isis and Converge for their recent Japanese tour. In May this year, ENVY was invited to play at the All Tomorrow’s Parties (ATP) Festival, which was curated by Explosions in the Sky before touring Europe for 2 weeks in the end of June. This marked their second appearance at ATP and the quintet has also played at festivals in France, Taiwan and most significantly, the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in 2006. ENVY beautifully crafted arrangements incorporate hardcore intensity with cinematic landscapes and dynamic texture into doom sensibility. Their ability to blend the epic tendencies of post-rock loud-soft dynamic to evoke both crushing brutality and gentle beauty, often within the same song illustrates this Japanese band original music style. Much has been made of vocalist Tetsuya Fukugawa’s own skill at commanding this dichotomy and thus, their live shows have grown in legend over the years. The band is also noted for their deep poetic lyrics. As described by seminal post-rocker, Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai, “An amazing live band with qualities of both a ranging tornado and the calmness after a storm”. The ENVY show will indeed be a memorable audio journey.
